Young STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) workers would like to see a greater connection between employers and schools as a new report looks at their experiences as they made the journey from school to work. The report from Baker Dearing Educational Trust, the charity that promotes UTCs, found nearly half (45%) of 20-35 year-olds working in STEM related roles, believe the subjects they studied in school are useless in the world of work. UTC Oxfordshire ‘pioneers’ receive university offers
The first sixth formers to complete their studies at UTC Oxfordshire are celebrating receiving offers from some of the country’s top universities. A total of 18 Year 13 students – the first to complete their A-level and BTEC programmes since the UTC opened in 2015 – have applied to study at university next year. The group, referred to as ‘pioneers’ for taking up places before the school launched, have secured offers from Russell Group universities including Cambridge, Liverpool, Cardiff, Southampton and Warwick. Young Engineers UK announced that Energy Coast UTC has been selected as a finalist for Young Engineer School of the Year 2017. 600 schools entered the competition this year and only 6 schools have been selected to go through to the final. Finalists were selected based on the strength of their student Engineering projects, their Engineering curriculum and how students are prepared for careers in Engineering. UTC Leeds students use technical skills to change lives
Talented students at UTC Leeds are using the latest state-of-the-art technology to print prosthetic hands for people in need across the world. The students apply their technical training to create the hands using the school’s 3D printers. The prosthetic hands will be couriered to a global charity called Enable the Future and distributed to adults and children in countries such as Haiti, South Africa and Ghana as well as in the UK. Baker Dearing Educational Trust appoints new trustee
Baker Dearing Educational Trust are delighted to announce that the founder of Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG), Professor Lord Bhattacharyya is to become a trustee on the board. Lord Baker and Lord Dearing created the Baker Dearing Educational Trust in 2007 to develop and promote University Technical Colleges (UTCs).
