UTC Norfolk students develop wind farm using 3D technologies

Students from UTC Norfolk have worked with energy company Vattenfall and 3D-visualisation firm 3DW to inform the development of software that will be used to show what the proposed Norfolk Vanguard offshore wind farm project will look like. This unique opportunity was the culmination of a 6-week core project by the students – also supported by Seajacks, RG Carter, Statoil, Gardline and the Wind Energy Museum – which saw the Year 12 students learning about all aspects of wind turbine technology, planning and development. Snap happy UTC students commissioned for luxury home development

Home builder Shanly Homes launched a photography competition for students at The Watford UTC to uncover new talent and commission unique pieces for Elder Place property development in Bushey. Inspired by the development’s leafy surroundings, students were given a brief of ‘flowers in bloom’ and three weeks to submit images that captured Spring. Two winners were selected: Martyna Przekop from year 13 and Aliysha Shahzad from year 10. Students at UTC Swindon have been putting their civil engineering skills to the test with a bridge-building project set by a national construction firm. The Year 10 students worked in teams, supported by staff from HOCHTIEF (UK) Construction, to build a bridge which could support as much weight as possible. The aim of the project was to introduce students to careers in civil engineering and develop skills of teamwork and innovation. Professor Lord Winston officially opens UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park

Leading scientist Professor Lord Winston officially opened Sheffield’s second University Technical College on 23 May. During the visit Lord Winston toured the new facilities at Olympic Legacy Park, saw students demonstrating technical tasks, took part in a student-led question and answer session and unveiled a commemorative plaque. Computing students showcased their robotics and Raspberry Pi skills; health sciences students explored the quality and quantity of sex cells under the microscope; and science students demonstrated extracting DNA from kiwi fruit.
