The catalyst for the first UTC was that local engineering
company JCB needed many more young people of the right calibre and
attitude who would be interested in careers with JCB and other
successful regional manufacturers. The UTC opened in 2010
with 270 students across Years 10 and 12.
The second year has started well with excellent results being
obtained in the first public examination models in maths and
science. The teaching of maths, English and the other
National Curriculum subjects is integrated with the engineering and
applied education and it is this model which staff believe has
contributed to the exam results obtained.
There are five terms per year and engineering tasks completed by
pupils in the first year of operation have been set by six of the
college's partners, JCB, Harper Adams University College, Toyota,
Network Rail and Bombardier.
The Baker Dearing Educational Trust is proud to support the JCB
Academy as the first University Technical College.
